AUGUST 2026 LOOK AHEAD

North America & Europe

May 1 - October 31

Wildfire Season

  • Wildfire activity is intensifying across North America as hot, dry, and windy conditions increase fire danger in parts of Canada and the western United States, with smoke periodically affecting communities far from active fires. In Europe, extreme heat and prolonged dryness have contributed to major fires and evacuations in Spain and France, while much of southern Europe remains vulnerable to additional fire outbreaks. Elevated fire potential is expected to persist through late summer, particularly across the northwestern United States and other drought-affected areas, while recurring heatwaves could rapidly worsen conditions in southern Europe.
  • Impact: Travelers may encounter poor air quality, road and rail closures, flight disruptions, evacuation orders, and restricted access to parks, rural areas, and popular tourist destinations near active fires. Plan contingencies ahead of travel to fire-prone regions.

Europe

August 1 - August 31

Holiday Season

  • August marks the peak of Europe's summer holiday season. Many European residents take annual leave during this period, sharply increasing demand across coastal destinations, major cities, and popular island resorts. The 2026 season is expected to place added strain on transportation networks, with European air traffic approaching 37,000 flights on the busiest days amid ongoing capacity and staffing constraints. That figure reportedly represents the maximum daily volume the European air traffic system can efficiently manage during the summer travel season.
  • Impact: Travelers should expect higher prices, limited lodging and rental car availability, crowded airports and roads, transportation delays, and reduced hours at some local businesses. Reconfirm reservations and itineraries prior to travel.

GLOBAL: WORLDWIDE CAUTION ALERT

  • As of August 1, the U.S. Department of State advises Americans in the Middle East to consider departing or be prepared to depart should there be further escalation in the U.S./Israel-Iran war.

  • The Department of State also re-issued a Worldwide Caution alert on July 22, advising Americans outside the Middle East to seriously reconsider travel to or through the region, and for those who do travel to or from the region to monitor information about airport and airline operations.

  • U.S. travelers may face sudden changes in local security environments and cascading impacts to travel/movement globally, including due to periodic airspace closures.
  • U.S. embassies and consulates, including those outside the Middle East, may scale back operations in response to threats.
  • Travelers should remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and monitor U.S. government alerts and local media for new developments.
